    Each coin weighs 11.66 gms (180 grains) with 0.917 silver purity. It is known as rupee or rupa (silver). The British India followed the same concept as introduced by Sher S. Suri.


    William IV (1831-1837)
    Newly designed coins with the effigy were issued in 1835.

    Queen Victoria (1838-1901)-Young Bust
    The coins issued after 1840 bore the “Young bust” of Queen Victoria.

    Queen Victoria-Mature Bust
    The first coinage under the crown was issued in 1862 with the Mature Bust of Queen Victoria.

    Queen Victoria-Empress (1877)
    In 1877 she assumed the title “Empress of India”. She died at the age of 81 & reigned for a total of 63 yrs-7 months-2 days-the longest reign in the British history.

    Edward VII (1901-1910)
    The Indian coinage act, 1906 issued the standards (Rupee 180 grains /11.66 grams of 0.917 silver). His coins were distinct as the head was uncrowned. The master dies were created before the coronation on Aug 1902.

    George V (1910-1936)
    Acute shortage of silver during WWI, led British Government to issue paper currency of One Rupee along with silver coin for sometime.
